A Potted History of The Fulwell Golf Club - Club Honours (continued)

One of the most impressive Club accolades is the Lord Saltoun trophy. Donated by Lord Saltoun himself in 1949 when he was Club President, he was a representative peer for Scotland from 1933 - 63, the family seat having been Cairnbulg Castle, Fraserburgh. Always contested as a foursomes event it is now competed for by members and their guests and has for the past half Century has been the Club’s main invitational event. Originally the Lord Saltoun was held as a sister event to Royal Mid Surrey’s famous “Antlers” competition, played on the same weekend each year and many entrants having a bash at both titles. Camberley Heath also has a Lord Saltoun Cup, presented by the father of the Fulwell Lord.

The Castle Cup – donated by the Castle family in 1908, this was another trophy originally presented to the Chiswick Golf Club by Abercromie Castle. His five sons and daughter joined Fulwell on the closure of Chiswick and this trophy is fittingly awarded to the victorious play off winner of all the years medal winners and runners-up in October each year.

Similarly, the Denny family wished to immortalise Flt Lt. B. M. Denny, who was tragically killed in action during the Second World War, by donating the Moreland Denny Memorial Trophy, an accurate model of a Sterling Bomber, in 1949. The competition format of having partners drawn by lot was particularly important to the family and adds an alternative dimension to the event.

The Alec Rose Trophy, an “objet-d’art” silver cigarette case was presented to the club by the Vauderville Golf Society in 1971. Alec was Honorary Secretary of the Society for over 40 years from the late 20’s through to the 1960’s. The Society first became affiliated to Fulwell after the Second World War and still play on a monthly basis at the Club. Many of the Society’s members are well known celebrities of today and yesteryear such as Eric Sykes, Ted Ray, Bud Flanagan, Dickie Henderson, Bruce Forsyth, Jimmy Hill, Harry Secombe, Charlie Chester, Ken Wolstenholme, Roger De Coursey – “Nookie Bear” fame.

The Gough / Lynde Trophy, has been contested annually between Fulwell and its close neighbour Strawberry Hill Golf Club since 1949 when these two gentlemen were the Captains of their day. Similarly, the ladies sections of the two Clubs play for the Batchelor Cup.

Miss Ida Green has a special place in the history of Fulwell and uniquely the Miss Green Salver(s) are contested separately by the men and ladies of Fulwell each year. Ida was an early member of the Club, joining in 1906. She was Ladies Captain from 1911 – 1914, was appointed Ladies Secretary soon after the First World War and during the Second, from 1940-46 was the Club Secretary.

The above represents only part of the Club’s trophy collection, which includes many other memorials from founder members, such as H. O. Stutchbury, C. G. Chalk, and Mr Downes Elland Norton to present day personalities such as past Presidents Dickie Tulip and Kevin Donohue and the Varney and Donald families. Just like family heirlooms the Club’s eclectic mix of trophies represent far more than their intrinsic value. Their history and background being an integral part of the Club’s evolution and a tangible link with members from the past.
