A Potted History of The Fulwell Golf Club - The Professionals

Throughout its history Fulwell has been recognised as a centre of excellence for golf instruction. Phil Gaudin was professional at the Club from 1906 to the outbreak of the First World War and competed as an international for England in 1906, 07, 09, 12 & 13 and finishing 9th in the Open Championship.

The great Henry Cotton, began his career at the Club in 1923/4 along with his brother Leslie. Both were employed as assistant professionals to George Oke, (at the Club from 1921 – 1946) who was a first rate tournament professional, club maker and in 1930 appointed Chairman of the PGA.

Bill Cox (1946-1975)
Probably the most illustrious of all Fulwell Professionals was Bill Cox, with the Club from 1946 to 1975. He represented Britain in the Ryder Cup matches of 1935 & 37 but more importantly established an extraordinary reputation as a teacher of golf, publishing several instructional books through his long career and creating a renown academy at Fulwell in the 1950’s. He was Golf Illustrated’s chief instruction expert and a member of the BBC commentary team, receiving the OBE for services to golf in 1967.

David Haslam, professional from 1975 - 1995 remains an active member of the club today, playing to a handicap of 5. For a time he held the course record at nearby Ashford Manor Golf Club (where he was the professional) and was Wiltshire County Champion on no less than 6 occasions. David played in several exhibition matches with the likes of Bobby Locke and Peter Alliss and in 1969 he refereed the Ryder Cup match between Tony Jacklin and Neil Coles against Lee Trevino and Jerry Barber.
